A Death In Tuscany: Culinary Mystery In Italy Customer Reviews
:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Matthew -- Not sure it knows what it wants to be... : It lacked self awareness. The story is not very compelling. There is no sympathetic character to help move the story along. It is a mystery, but not one that the reader can invest in and solve. The clues are not there to be uncovered, instead, it has to be revealed. A LOT of this reads like a textbook on wineries and an Italian travel guide... But apparently that is where this author is most comfortable. The romance storyline was flat, boring and disingenuous. And finally, the hero is a man that left Italy as a child, but somehow knows and remembers everyone and how to drive to the police station, municipal center, and the hall of records. Everyone expects him to solve a crime, though they have not seen him for years and he has no experience investigating anything. Finally, it's a big leap to sympathize with a bland young man, that shows up and instantly inherits a castle, a business empire a Maserati and a house full of dutiful staff and employees without a hint of turmoil. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret Stevens -- Tuscany captured : As you read this book, it becomes more and more obvious that the writer knows what he's talking about. He manages to capture the pace of life during harvest in an Italian vineyard. The characters, the landscapes, the food and especially the wine are all treated with understated reverence. Even the automobiles and their maintenance have their place in the story. Wine-making is mysterious to most Americans, but not to Italians who spend their lives working with the grapes. Before the reader realizes what's happening, he is sucked into this love affair with Tuscany and it's principal industry of creating great wines. The personalities of the workers of this miracle come through gently and inevitably as you keep reading. I had a wonderful time reading this book, slowing my pace of life to the gentle passage of time in Tuscany. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Captain Kate -- Intriguing mystery : Well thought out book. Takes the reader right to Tuscany and emerges you in the countryside. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this mystery. Would recommend. Especially if you've had the opportunity to visit the area. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Patricia K. Sherwood -- More of a travelog : ...than a mystery. I skimmed through the majority of this story. Yes, I do like a little background of country and culture but this droned on and on. Also the constant comparison between Italy and America became a bit tiresome. After sticking it out to the end, I felt it was anticlimactic. Now if a reader loves learning about Tuscany and wine making in detail, I recommend this story. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gloria -- The first son of the first son : Family heritage can be both interesting and cruel, as well as sometimes surprising. The wind industry goes back hundreds and hundreds of years in Italy and stories and legends are right there too. This story kept my interest by layering events and friendships as well as romances. An interesting and surprising finish. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2019 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lost Mom -- Wine Travelogue / Mystery : This book was first, a travelogue for wine connoisseurs and second, a mystery with some romance mixed in. The information about grapes and wine was fascinating, even though I am not a wine drinker. Mr. Rosano did his research well. The main characters were developed and believable. There was no profanity and no sex, although sex was implied several times in the book. No violence. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan -- An armchair visit to Tuscany : What an enjoyable book. The scenery and pleasures of food and wine invite the reader to experience Tuscany with all of our senses. The mystery element of the book was not the main feature as it was dwarfed by the majestic of Tuscany, but then that was okay with me. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Ronald K. Byers -- Mystery in Wine Country with Loose Ends : Nice little wine mystery and love story. If you don't think about it too much and enjoy the scenery and the wine and the Maserati, you can forgive the loose ends that were ignored at the end. The description was good and one felt like one was in Italian wine country. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2017 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Ex-Newyorker in France -- It's a non-no : This book was self-published and I can see why. If you want info on how to make wine, read it. If you want a good mystery, forget it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 1, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Frank -- Rambling : Rambling, does not go anywhere, but does give restaurant menu suggestions. No tension no direction. Disappointing all round ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Five Stars : Very good another great read ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2017 )
