:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lupin -- Dan Rhodes' is not happy but he is funny. : Dan Rhodes has written a vicious satire of the publishing industry. His books are always unique and humorous but this one has a passion of vitriol reminiscent of the political cartoons of the 18th century. The main character of the story is so thinly veiled that at first I thought why bother but then I realized that this actually made it even funnier. Dan Rhodes pours his anger out in such an amusing manner that it makes the book even more compelling rather than tiring which could have been a risk in less skilled hands. The book is unique and deserves a wide audience. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from A. Crofts -- Everyone even slightly involved in publishing should read this : Every right-thinking person in publishing, from the grandest of grandees to the the most modest of literary festival workers, will love this book. Every wrong-thinking person in publishing should also read it, because they will almost certainly find themselves depicted in it. It is as funny as Wodehouse and as page-turning as whatever book you normally find totally addictive. I hope many outraged people try to discredit it and accidentally make it a media sensation outside the publishing industry as well as inside. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Pargeter -- Why? : As a professional writer, I know that writing any book takes a great deal of time, concentration and tenacity. I therefore always ask myself why a writer wrote the book I’ve just read, rather than the many other books they could have written. Rarely has this question been more pertinent than it is with ‘Sour Grapes’ by Dan Rhodes. The world of authors and literary festivals is ripe for satire, though there have probably already been too many books on the subject. It’s a world most writers have been involved in, so offers them a setting which requires no research. Dan Rhodes attacks that world with relish, though his satirical weapon is the sledgehammer, rather than my preferred favourite, the scalpel. As a result, the success of the book’s set pieces is very hit and miss. Sharp attacks, like that on J.K.Rowling’s litigious nature, work very well, while the arcane rituals indulged in by the people at the top of the publishing hierarchy are over the top and silly. And the central butt of the satire, an all-too-recognisable writer of total impenetrability and impervious self-esteem, will pass unscathed through the hail of brickbats in this book. Indeed, the fact that someone has bothered to write a book about the self-aggrandising poseur will only serve to validate the mythology of his self. Dan Rhodes is clearly a talented writer, but why did he bother to write this book? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2021 )

Loved every page and haven’t laughed like that at a book for a long time. Genius. :) ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kathy Lee -- Not about grapes : Dan Rhodes is one of all time favourite authors and I was delighted to see he’d published a new novel after a fair few years. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2021 )
