  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Cornwall -- A Reminder of Human possibilities of Depravity : I was moved to read this short novel as I was reading King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa. I'd seen the movie Apocalypse Now, which is based on the novel years ago. I must confess that my reading of the book was influenced by the movie, but it is an intriguing novel exploring the darkness that can come upon a person when they become engrossed in evil. In this case the evil of exploitation of a land and people in Africa. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2014 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Allen Berry -- Not With a Bang, but a Whimper : An excellent novel that is deceptively complex. I taught this novel as a part of my World Literature Course and later as representative of early Modernism. The story is populated by deeply flawed characters, of which only the central two begin to grasp the depth of their personal inconsistencies. The action of the novel is set against the backdrop of the height of British Colonialism, with a thriving trade in African Ivory. The central figure, Marlow expounds about the shocking treatment of the indigenous peoples of Africa, all the while seemingly ignorant of his own objectification and racism. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Complex is fancy word for confusing : If by complex you mean confused then I am complex. I don't know what all the hype is about. Having heard references to Heart of Darkness all my adult life, I read this book because I felt it would increase my literary knowledge. If I had it to do over I would just read the ( Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2015 )

( Reviewed in France on September 12, 2021 )
